Vicky Kaushal’s new historical drama, Chhaava, has taken the box office by storm! Despite mixed reviews, the film directed by Laxman Utekar has shattered multiple records, proving its massive appeal.
Chhaava kicked off 2025 with the biggest opening of the year, raking in a whopping ₹31 crore on its first day across all languages. This not only makes it Vicky Kaushal’s highest-ever opener (smashing his Uri: The Surgical Strike record of ₹8.2 crore) but also beats Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force (₹15.3 crore) to claim the top spot. Even more impressively, the film stole the title of highest-grossing Indian film on Valentine’s Day from Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy (₹19.4 crore in 2019).
Set in the 17th century, Chhaava brings the gripping story of Maratha king Sambhaji (played by Vicky) to life, with Rashmika Mandanna as his queen, Yesubai. The star-studded cast includes Akshaye Khanna as Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, Ashutosh Rana as a warrior leader, and Divya Dutta as the cunning Soyarabai. Based on Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel Chhava, the film blends grand action with emotional drama, backed by A.R. Rahman’s soulful music and Irshad Kamil’s poetic lyrics.
Produced by Maddock Films, Chhaava has struck a chord with audiences, boasting a 35% theater occupancy in Hindi on Day 1. While critics are split, fans are flocking to see Vicky’s powerful performance and the film’s epic scale. Will it sustain this momentum? Only time will tell, but for now, Chhaava is rewriting box office history!
